KIEC History
Know The History Of KIEC
Around 75 years ago a young Muslim lady stepped into the Chambers of Marhoom M.H. Abdul Aziz, a leading Advocate. He was the father of Marhoom M. Shibly Aziz, the past president of Ceylon Islamic Instructions Society Limited., C.I.I.S.Ltd., (Central Federation of Ahadhiyyah Schools in Sri Lanka). She wanted to sort out a dispute with her family members. On inquiring the matter in detail Mr.Aziz found the root of the cause for the dispute. This led Mr. Aziz to the noble idea in establishing the Ahadhiyyah School system.
It is very happy to state that this Centre (Formerly known as Slave Island Islamic Instructions Society Ltd., Slave Island Branch) is serving the Society and the general public uninterruptedly for the past 62 long years. Alhamdulillah! By the great guidance of Almighty Allah and with the assistance from our staff Members, Well-wishers, Parents and students the service confined to Sunday Ahadhiyyah Religious Schools has extended further, after constructed a small four storied building.
The first Ahadhiyyah School was established in 1.12.1951 at Galle. They wanted to extend this concept in other parts of the nation. A group of well prominent leaders worked with the President of C.I.I.S. Ltd., Advocate Mr.M.H. Abdul Aziz tirelessly to spread the System Island wide. Initial Ahadhiyyah lessons were prepared by Marhoom Umar Hazrath, the principal of Maharagama Gaffooriya Arabic College with the assistance of Marhoom Moulavi M.A.C.A. Lafir Alim (Bahji). The co-numbers were well educated reputed at that period
During this period Moulavi M.A.C.A. Lafir (Bahji), co-founder of C.I.I.S.Ltd., was the Chief Imam and resided at Zaiviyathul Khairiya, (Sir Henry Demal St., Colombo 02). Ltd., adopted the name and functioned under the constitution of C.I.I.S.Ltd.,(All these members were departed to their external life - May Almighty accepts all their services)
Ahadhiyyah School Established in the year 1952 as one of the Pioneer Ahadhiyyah School in the Island and first Ahadhiyyah in the Colombo region. By the grace of Almighty Allah and the co-operation received from our staff Members, Well-wishers, Parents and students, this Centre has served the Society and the general public uninterruptedly for the past 70 years, Alhamdhulillah! The secret of success of this achievement is none other than the team work of the members and teachers with their (pure mind). “Iqlaas”
Initially, Ahadhiyyah Classes were conducted at several places in Kompannaweediya to cover the particular area. Such as Shahul Hameediya Mosque, (Thakkiya Gardens, No.42, Stewart Street), Zahira College – now known as T.B.Jayah Zahira M.V., and Govt.Muslim Senior School (Al-Iqbal B.M.V.-now known as Mariam Girls M.V., Sir James Pieris Mawatha), Malay Progressive Union (34, Java Lane), All Ceylon Malay Association (Kew Barrack),Pandan Bali Hall at Wekande Jummah Masjidh (Saunders’ Courts), Halqa Hall at Akbar Jummah Masjidh (Kew Road), Malharul Islam Association (18/88, Church Street) and Res. No 15, Station Passage) along with some other private residences. Although we have established in 1951. In the year 1954 it’s organised all these classes in two main schools with Shahul Hameediya Masjidh, under one umbrella. These classes conducted as ordinary Qur-aan Madhrasa level for two hours on Sunday Mornings. Ahadhiyyah lessons taught in question and answer form, singing some Arabic Byths. But later it’s progressed rapidly. Then these classes identified as “Gnayuthukkilamai Palli” (Sunday Madhrasa). Subsequently, Moulavi Laffir has made a proposal at the C.I.I.S. office meeting, convened on 31st March 1956 and have adopted the name as “Ahadhiyyah School”. Means Sunday school. Also “Ahadh” literally means oneness of Allah’s. We have adopted the name too and our School was recognised as Ahadhiyyah School, Slave Island Branch of C.I.I.S. Ltd.,
From inception the KIEC had good guidance from the parent body CIIS Ltd., The members worked with good spirit with “Iqlas. Due to the unblemished service the School was grows rapidly. Several motivation steps has been taken to exist the systems lively. The Ahadhiyyah Annual Prize Givings, Hathees Majlis and other religious programs get recognized by the community and reserved prominent places. In this period the prominent young members as B.M. Mohideen, S.M. Shihabdeen, A.C.M. Roohul Ameen, S.H.M. Ghouse, A.M. Siddeek , A.C.M. Rahmathullah were joined the School administration and pumped their young blood. They initiated new ideas and the first ever Tamil monthly paper named “Ahadhiyyah Chudar” was printed and circulated at Colombo Ahadhiyyah Circle. (All these good souls have departed to their eternal life).
From the establishment of Ahadhiyyah School, the office work has been carried out at the presidents’ or secretaries’ residences. The members used to gather there for their formal discussions and routing office work. The work/discussions will be started after the Isha prayers for couple of hours. In some occasions these would have gone till dawn of the next day. Because of the selfless members devotion the growth was fruitful. This was reflected during the Silver Jubilee period. The Students population has raised up to 1800 nos. and volunteer staff roll to 36.
The School grows rapidly. Annual Prize giving and parent meetings were helped us to exist and expand the system. The Ahadhiyyah Prize Givings and Hathees Majlis had prominent places in the community in those years. In 70’s the Management has decided with a broader vision. Not confined only Ahadhiyyah Sunday classes, but to implement more social activities to the society along with Ahadhiyyah School. To implement the vision, our first ambition was to own a permanent building to fulfil the dream.
Slave Island was a prominent name under British Rule. Prisoners and Slaves were detained here. Even after gained the independence of Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Government not bothered to take any steps to change this. In Sinhala and Tamil it has been changed to Kompanna Weediya but not in English. This place had several business establishments before the entered the Island. Later the invaders too established several companies. We made several request to higher authorities but not yet succeeded. To change the name but not yet succeeded.
We gone through all these facts and decided in 1987 to omit Slave Island from our documents. So, we have changed the name of the institution as “Kompannaweediya Islamic Educational Centre” and adopted our own constitution adhering to Head Office. This decision has helped us to broaden our scope and services. Purchased our own property at 121, Church Street.
Alhamdulillah! Because of this devotion and well planned agenda the institution achieved its’ Target. A small house (02 perches) has bought in 1987 and shifted the office there. Our savings amount to Rs.225, 000/= has spent (collected from our parents and well-wishers for over a period of 25 years) + 75,000/= collected from our well-wishers Like A.H.L.A. Saleem (president of Central Federation of Ahadhiyyah) and collection from our members and other supporters and has been utilized this purpose. Immediately we have renovated the building to shift our office.Planned activities systematically. At this juncture Eagerly remembering our late Treasurer Alhaj Shahul Hameed and the Management for saved this fund and utilized it carefully.
The devoted members and teachers were took a major role in succeeding these projects. Without their coordination, co-operation and selfless service is the true cause for the achievement. May all these souls receive Almighty Allah’s favour.
